300 words about nothing

2 min read
Grok bot and Sleeper: five years of transactions, three bid options, two guys getting text updates. Final decision: do nothing, with $183 left.

My fantasy football league has five years of receipts. I just found out how to use them against my friends.

Achane got hurt. His backup suddenly looked interesting. My buddy Greg and I were considering a Godfather offer.

In our league, you get $200 for free-agent bids for the entire season. We had $183 left. Even if we spent all of it, a few teams could still outbid us.

The obvious competition was our friend who’d just lost Achane. How much would he spend to replace him?

Normally, we’d guess. Maybe remember what he’d done last year. This time, I asked Grok bot to look through our league’s transaction history and everyone’s remaining budget.

I thought I’d have to log in and walk it through everything. It only needed my Sleeper username. Sleeper’s public API gave it access to the data.

It came back with past bids, likely competitors, and three options: $18, $42, or $58, depending on how badly we wanted him.

Now we were getting somewhere.

Then came the part that complicated our Godfather offer: another Miami running back was expected back. We could be paying for a starting job that would shortly become a committee.

I wasn’t going to take a chatbot’s fantasy football opinion on faith. We dug into it. I even had it text Greg and me the next day with an update on the other running backs’ health and expected workload.

Two grown men receiving automated scouting updates about a player we didn't even bid on.

We passed. Then we tried to convince our friend we were going to bid anyway.

Anyway, that’s my long story about how I did nothing. I hope you enjoyed.

If you play on Sleeper, try this with your own league. Five years of transactions were just sitting there waiting to be used.
